What is a Carpenter?
Carpentry is one of the oldest and most needed trades. It is a career that is continuing to grow as more people buy homes and offices or perform renovations to existing structures to save money. Carpenters work with many different tools and materials to build homes, multi-family dwellings, schools, businesses, and even skyscrapers, roadways and bridges. Every building you see was worked on by a Carpenter at some point during its construction. It is certainly a life-long career path to choose, especially if you enjoy building, constructing and working with a wide variety of tools.
What is an Interior Systems Carpenter?
This is a growing field of Carpentry involving the installation of a wide variety of factory-produced systems and construction materials in commercial buildings and public structures. Specialized skills are used as they assemble complex interior systems using technical data supplied by the manufacturers. From acoustical ceiling systems to metal doors, jambs and hardware, an Interior Systems Carpenter is the vanguard in modular construction methods.
Millwrights are rotating equipment mechanics, a more elite group of workers who deal mainly with metals, machinery and equipment requiring precision. They are considered skilled construction mechanics, working on various types of equipment including steam and gas turbines, compressors, pumps, escalators and conveyor systems such as those you would find in Airports and Breweries. And the horizon is only widening for this trade as Millwrights install Wind Energy Turbines all over the country.
Millwrights need a love for machine tools and precision instruments. This position requires an individual with detailed work habits, solid general mathematic skills and a good eye for "the perfect fit". In some cases, Millwrights work with specifications that require extremely tight tolerances. You will also learn to study and interpret blue prints before drilling, welding, bolting or whatever may be needed to ensure the machine is in perfect working order. Some Millwrights also perform installation and maintenance of machinery in factories and handle much of the precision work that takes place in Nuclear Power Plants and Oil Refineries.
